Aristotle's Metaphysics is a two-book volume from the Loeb Classical Library. These are my first Loeb's so I was quite excited.
I got the one of the right from Isseido Bookstore (一誠堂書店), the same place I got the Mahabharata. It's pretty dinged up, but it is at least 70 years old, so I can't complain.
The one on the left, I bought new from Amazon. It was quite a bit cheaper than other options, and had next-day delivery, so I was quite baffled.
While I'm not unhappy with the book, it is a bit quirky. The print is legible, but it is slightly faded/thin in some parts, and sometimes noticeably crooked. Even my copy from 70 years ago, despite the browning and foxing papers, has perfectly legible print.
Doing some research, others seem to have encountered similar issues as well, like in this Reddit thread. Apparently early volumes of the Loeb Classical Library no longer have copyright, and so it's possible for anyone to re-print and sell these books on-demand. Which I assume is what happened for my case as well.
I'm not against it, but I do wish they did a better job printing the book...
Anyways, this has been a lesson for me to be cautious of ordering slightly cheaper copies of copyright-expired books.
